SLACK ROMAN FORT, OUTLANE

The Society's report "The Romans in Huddersfield - A New Assessment' has been published as a British Archaeology Report, BAR British Series 620.

The report presents strong evidence that the vicus area, next to the fort, was occupied and active long after the fort was demilitarised. There is a review of all the excavations on the site in recent times and a detailed, illustrated report on the HDAS excavations in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Radiocarbon dating and pottery analysis show convincingly that there was considerable late activity adjacent to the fort and the nearby Roman road from Chester to York.

The volume is available from the publisher Hadrian Books Ltd and other booksellers.

MYTHOLMBRIDGE CORN MILL

John Cross reports that the exploration of the long buried remains of the water powered Corn Mill at Mytholmbridge is going well. The south east corner of the mill survives about one metre down. The lower section of the culvert has been more fully exposed and has been shown to be built directly on to bedrock.

John adds - "We now think we have located the wheel pit for the mill.( See photos - right.).The gap between the two sets of parallel stones is one metre. We have since exposed three courses and they head straight into the field toward the former mill pond. At the end of each wall, where they protrude into the trench, an overhang has been cut. This could be where the axle and supporting framework for the wheel was located prior to its salvaging."
