John Cross reports that the exploration of the long buried remains of the water powered Corn Mill at Mytholmbridge is going well. The south east corner of the mill survives about one metre down. The lower section of the culvert has been more fully exposed and has been shown to be built directly on to bedrock.
John adds – “We now think we have located the wheel pit for the mill. The gap between the two sets of parallel stones is one metre. We have since exposed three courses and they head straight into the field toward the former mill pond. At the end of each wall, where they protrude into the trench, an overhang has been cut.This could be where the axle and supporting framework for the wheel was located prior to its salvaging.“
